Sedation is typically used for young children that have difficulty coping with dental procedures, children with high stress and anxiety and occasionally children with special needs. Procedures that often require sedation include extractions, root canals, crowns and fillings.
According the the American Dental Association, sedation is an integral part of dentistry, and supports the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s view that it is an effective strategy in ensuring patient comfort.
Dr. Patel is committed to your child’s well-being, and she will supply you with pre- and post-sedation instructions before any sedatives or anesthetics are administered.
Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a safe and effective means of decreasing pain and reducing anxiety during various dental procedures. The gas, which is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, is painlessly inhaled through a mask. In order to make the process even more relaxed, your child will smell pleasant and sweet aromas through the flavored mask. Nitrous oxide takes effect rapidly, yet wears off within moments. Patients retain consciousness and are able to speak to their dentist. It is considered to be one the safest forms of sedation and is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
